My Word-of-the-Day Challenge

Directions: Use the Word of the Day from Merriam-Webster.com from the month of August in a scene; each day’s post must be a continuation of the previous day’s post.

Word count limit: 150 words


August 25, 2021, Merriam-Webster Word of the Day: ossify (v.)

Definition:

1: to change into bone The cartilages ossified with age.

2: to become hardened or conventional and opposed to change


Bjorn arched his brow. “That’s a bit melodramatic.” 

“Maybe, but my vouching for you will go a long way.” Answered by an ossified leer, Roar laughed. “Oh, c’mon! Seriously, what sinister ulterior motive could I possibly have? Goodwill and peace? Making your job easier? And I’ll only ask you to let me help you for today. What do you say?” 

I don’t see that I have a choice, thought Bjorn. “The police chief gave an order–.” 

“Ah-ah.” Roar pointed. “Check the text again. It’s a request. Or at least it should be. She said it would be…” 

He was nearly right. 

Rereading the text, Bjorn found it was in fact a recommendation by his new commanding officer to take advantage of Roar Saj’s influence within the Jubar community to build rapport.

If this first stop was any indication of what’ll happen without him…

“Okay.”
