Night had fallen with the last rays of daylight fading in the west as a green city bus squeaked to a stop outside of an old, gated apartment complex. Roar vaulted off the bus, a small white pastry box in hand, and tore through the pedestrian gate.
Dim yellow light pooled faintly around lampposts throughout the parking lot which he crossed to building 8. He darted into the first breezeway and up the rear stairs, two steps at a time.
“ROAR!!”
Foot striking the edge of the top step, he stumbled headlong into the second level breezeway, but managed to twist to land on his shoulder instead of the less-than-resilient box.
Roar blinked with relief. “Holy pooh, that was close.”
A teenage human girl stood over him, disapprovingly. “You went to the fish market, like, this morning. How are you just getting back now?”
