Let’s Play A Game

I promised myself some sort of fun story surprise and I now know what it’s gonna be, and I need your help. It’s like an improv (sketch comedy) game: I beckon the audience (you) for suggestions with which I’ll concoct a scene.

THE RULES!

You have from now until the end of Friday to post suggestions in the comments, and then on Saturday I’ll put them all in hats and draw ideas as I write. One week from today I’ll give you a scene.

No more than 2 suggestions per list item per person (at most, you can give suggestions for the entire list twice!). An unlimited number of people can play. Random is good, but random doesn’t necessarily mean weird. Trust me when I say the simplest ideas are sometimes the best. And, the more total suggestions, the better. Keep it PG-13, please.

Okay, Mr. and Ms. Audiences out there, here’s what I’ll need:

  • An animal
  • A color (e.g. island blue, sweet chrysanthemum pink – behr.com has awesome color names)
  • A bumper sticker quote
  • Your least favorite food
  • A location (e.g. on an island, outside a castle, on top of a flying whale)
  • Something green
  • Advice your mother/grandmother once gave you
  • An inanimate object
  • A fictional weather/natural phenomenon (e.g. gummi bear hailstorm)
  • Something you might shout at a squirrel

How Will The Scene Start? What Sort Of Scene Will It Be?

In sketch comedy, it’s true that the games usually have an outline. For example, in Remote Control, the “Controller” plays, rewinds or fast-forwards the scene that two players are acting out. Or, in Newscasters, the topics of nightly news reported by the “field reporters” are based on suggestions.

Our game is a variation on my favorite, Draw the Line. In the original game, the players collect various types of quotes (e.g. grandma’s advice) from the audience at the start of the show. Those quotes (written on paper) are cut out and divided blindly between the players. The scene is given direction with three verbal suggestions from the audience and then, throughout the scene, the players must randomly draw and incorporate lines. (I’ve adjusted this game for our purposes).

Mini Scene!

[Once I did a Draw the Line scene with a cool lady where we were furiously digging holes. At one point amongst our digging fury, I drew a bumper sticker quote: “well, MY SON IS AN HONORS STUDENT!!” And she shot back with, “MINE, TOO!” Then we stopped/straightened, congratulated each other with grins and hand shakes, and then abruptly resumed digging.]

Our Scene Starts Here

I’ll begin with 3 of your ideas: a location, inanimate object, and mother/grandmother’s advice.

Thank you in advance for playing! You’re making my week. Let’s have some fun. BEGIN! (Remember, the window for suggestions closes Friday at 11:59PM.)

UPDATE – the scene became a short story which I’m posting in chunks (“Nana Ana’s Secret Hideout”).
